Meet the Khula team
Nick Steytler is a certified Environmental Assessment Practitioner (EAP) with over 20 years experience in the field of environmental management. He holds a Masters of Science degree in the field of Conservation Biology (University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg campus) and is a certified Environmental Scientist (Pr Sci Nat). He was initially employed in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) as part of the Institute of Natural Resources’ Natural Resource Management Programme where much of his work focussed on the sustainable use of natural resources in rural KZN. He then moved to the Western Cape where he was employed by SRK Consulting as an Environmental Scientist. He remained with SRK for 5 years during which time he provided services to clients in both the public and private sectors in not only in South Africa but also in Southern Africa. The majority of his work was in the field of environmental management (i.e. undertaking Environmental Impact Assessment [EIA] and the like). After leaving SRK, Nick joined Dudley Janeke Environmental Consultants (DJEC) as an Associate Consultant. Since leaving DJEC he founded KHULA Environmental Consultants and holds the position of Director. His work focuses on business development while managing the larger projects and providing quality control and mentoring roles to the other team members.
Monique has a BA Degree in Geography & Environmental Science and Media & Communication Studies from Monash University. She is extremely self-motivated and has completed a BSc (Hons) degree at the University of the Witwatersrand in Geography and Environmental Studies, with her research focussing on the social aspect of environmental assessments. Monique has also completed the coursework component of a Masters degree at the University of Johannesburg. Monique’s career in environmental management began in 2003 in Johannesburg where she was employed by Holgate & Associates as an environmental consultant. In 2006 Monique presented a paper on the value of public participation in environmental assessment decision-making at the IAIA Conference in Stavanger, Norway. After moving to the Western Cape in 2007 she was employed by SRK Consulting and in 2008 joined KHULA. Monique manages smaller environmental assessments (known as Basic Assessments) and is mainly involved in Environmental Control Officer (ECO) work in which she monitors and manages the progress of developments in terms of a site-specific Environmental Management Plan (EMP).
Natasha van de Haar
Natasha is a registered Professional Natural Scientist (Pr.Sci.Nat) with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP). She also holds a Masters Degree in Science (M.Sc.) in the field of Botany. Over the course of Natasha’s career, she completed a number of floral identification short courses and also obtained a certificate of competence for wetland assessments from Rhodes University. She is also a member of the International Affiliation for Impact Assessments (IAIAsa) group, Botanical Society of SA as well as the Western Cape Wetlands Forum. Her career kicked off as a field ecologist in 2009, focusing on floral biodiversity and ecological functioning, with special mention of wetland ecology and functioning within South Africa (all provinces). She further worked as part of a specialist project member in Mauritius, Lesotho and Ghana. During the course of her career she obtained extensive experience in conducting terrestrial as well as wetland related surveys in the mining, residential and infrastructure development industries as well as development of several alternative energy facilities. Natasha also gained experience in Biodiversity Offset Initiatives as well as RDL/protected plant permit applications. Presently her main focus is wetland assessments including delineation as well as present ecological state and function assessments.
Robert holds a BA Degree in Geography & Environmental Science and Media & Communication Studies from Monash University and has completed studies towards a Bachelor of Arts Honours in Environmental Management at University of South Africa. Robert has worked in the environmental consulting field since 2008 when he was employed as an Environmental Technician at The MSA Group. His work at MSA Group involved Environmental Auditing for construction projects, Environmental Impact Assessments, Waste Management License applications, undertaking environmental monitoring required for Prospecting Rights and drafting of legal registers. In 2010 Robert joined Mills and Otten Environmental Consultants where he worked as and Environmental Scientist undertaking Environmental Control Officer work, as well as numerous contamination assessments, site remediation and monitoring projects within the petroleum industry. He has experience in utilising Risk Assessment modelling software, aquifer testing, as well as soil and groundwater sampling. Robert joined KHULA in 2017 and is involved in monitoring of construction sites in terms of Environmental Management Plans and Environmental Authorisations. He also conducts due diligence contamination assessments including environmental sampling and risk assessments for the identification and remediation of contaminated land.
